Chimwemwe Home

Since the latest newsletter, there have been 3 new children added to the Home.

The youngest is Melody, now 3 months old, who was born to proud parents, Bornface and Tabitha, house parents to the Home. Both parents are good singers and involved in their church choir so they have chosen a very appropriate name! They now have 3 daughters.

The 2 latest recruits to the Home are Kelvin, aged 9, and Daniel (Danny), aged 5. They are brothers who are double-orphans. Their parents both died in a road traffic accident 3 years ago. Following this, they were looked after by a grandmother. Unfortunately, this grandmother apparently developed some form of dementia which developed into 'serious madness'. As a result, whenever they went near their grandmother she would chase them away.

One day when they were going around begging for food from neighbours they were spotted by a lady who recognised them. This lady went to confront the grandmother about the situation, but she was also chased away. So she decided to take the children into her own home to look after them as she was a distant relative of the grandmother. However, after some time she decided to seek help from local orphanages for the 2 children as she was struggling to look after them and also 4 other children in a one-roomed house. Although she was promised help nothing materialised until she came to the attention of the Chimwemwe house-father. The children are now settling in well in the Home. They will start to attend a local primary school at the beginning of the next school year (January), Daniel attending school for the first time.

Another newcomer to the Home is a new assistant to the house parents, Grace. Grace had been working as a part-time cleaner for the offices/computer school. But due to her demonstrable good attitudes and hard work, she was asked to become the new assistant, a role she fills very well.

Graduates of the Children's Homes

Gideon, who graduated early this year, has recently heard that he has been accepted to study accountancy at Copperbelt University in Kitwe, starting in January. He is now looking for bursary funding to enable him to attend.

As she has done a couple of times before, Eva, a graduate from Chimwemwe 1, organised a BBQ for the current children in Chimwemwe 2. This time she invited also two of her 'siblings' from her time in the orphanage - Helen attended with her 4 boys, and Joseph Milanzi with his daughter and son (and student nurse fiancée).

Joseph was supported, not just while in Chimwemwe 1, but through a vocational training course in plumbing by an AET supporter. About 3 years ago, his contract work in plumbing seemed to be drying up so he decided to return to Lusaka. After doing a bit of driving work, he decided to take on a regular job as a security guard. Within a few weeks he had been promoted to zone controller. After another relatively short period of time, he applied for a better job within the same company and he is now their national Property Coordinator, for which his plumbing knowledge amongst other things is useful.
